FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS!

Please click here to read our Guide before viewing this page.

Q. Why should I get a license?

        A.  You can legally take on jobs over $500 and protect yourself against lawsuits. You can advertise as a licensed contractor in the Yellow Pages, newspapers, and other media. You can bid on state and local government projects and on projects financed by banks, S&Ls, and insurance companies. You can join builders exchanges and contractors associations, which offer job lists and group insurance rates. You can get contractor's credit accounts and discounts from building suppliers. You won't risk penalties, prosecution, or nonpayment for contracting without a license. You will have mechanics lien, stop notice, and bond rights to make sure you get paid.

Q. I have been working without a license. Will the CSLB prosecute me if I show unlicensed work experience on my "Certificate of Work Experience"?

        A. No. The CSLB wants you to be licensed and so they will acknowledge all work experience within the last ten years.

Q. What if I can't make my exam date?

        A. It is best simply not to go. The CSLB will mark your absence as a "failure" and soon after send you a form by which to reschedule your exam. You must pay the CSLB a $50.00 rescheduling fee at that time. You must reschedule within 90 days, otherwise your application will be void and you would need to reapply!

Q. What if I don't have 4 years of work experience at the journeyman level or higher?

        A. A college degree, vocational school or apprenticeship certificate may be used towards satisfying the four year requirement. Please see our Guide for further details.

Q. How do I get work experience?

        A. Perhaps you could join an apprenticeship program, a vocational school, or work under the guidance of a current licensed contractor. You may be self-employed or an owner/builder. You might contact the local union for referrals. You may even contact the local junior college to see if classes are offered in your trade.

Q. Are there any hidden fees?

        A. Nope! All fees are outlined on our Courses page.

Q. What is your passing rate?

        A. Over 98% of our students pass their exams on the first try.

Q. What does it mean when other schools offer a "money back guarantee"?

        A. Ask to see the fine print. How can any school guarantee that you will pass your exams if it is the State of California who controls the exams? What other schools often mean is that if you fail the exam, and if you reschedule to take the exam again ($50.00 fee to the state license board each time you reschedule), and if after a certain amount of time you still have not passed, then maybe, just maybe, they will refund your money. What CLC offers is legitimate. We guarantee that we will stick by you until you pass. No IF's. No time limits. No extra charges to our school.

Q. May I review your materials before I enroll?

        A. Of course! We invite you to visit our office to read our manuals, try out a few practice questions, You may even attend one live Law & Business lecture as a courtesy to you - no charge, no obligation, and no high-pressure sales pitch. Click here to view our lecture schedule.

Q. Are the CLC courses offered in any language besides English?

A.CLC courses are only offered in English, although we do have a Spanish translation of our Law manual. The CLSB exams are currently only offered in English. However, you may request more time and request a translator to assist in reading the questions and answers for you. The reader may be a friend or relative who can accompany you at your exam.
